Detroit and Its Water-Front, in 1887.
Black and white negative of a photograph taken of the lithograph "Detroit and Its Water-Front, in 1887." The pictured lithograph was originally published as a supplement to the May 7, 1887 edition of the Detroit Evening News, and is credited to J.R. Chapin and the Photo-Electrotype Engraving Company of New York. It shows a northward view along Woodward Avenue from an elevated position over Detroit's riverfront. Jefferson Avenue runs horizontally in the foreground. Michigan Avenue, and Gratiot Avenue extend into the corners of the background. Moonlight towers are visible rising among the buildings. A smaller secondary scene across the bottom of the print shows a variety of ships and boats on the Detroit River--including the LANSDOWNE, EXCELSIOR, GREYHOUND, CITY OF CLEVELAND, and ALMA MUNRO--with the city's riverfront in the background. On the periphery of the photo, thumb tacks are visible holding the print in position to be photographed.
