Quad anniversary celebration

This year marks a rare convergence of milestones that together tell a deeper story about Detroit’s past and present. We are commemorating 325 years since the arrival of the city’s first European settlers, a moment that shaped Detroit’s earliest identity and its role in the broader history of North America. At the same time, the nation marks 250 years since the founding of the United States, offering an opportunity to reflect on Detroit’s unique place within that national narrative—from frontier outpost to industrial powerhouse to a city continually redefining itself.

These anniversaries are also deeply connected to our mission as stewards of local history. The Detroit Historical Museum celebrates 75 years since opening its doors, while the Dossin Great Lakes Museum marks 65 years of preserving and sharing the region’s maritime heritage. Together, these milestones highlight not just the passage of time, but the enduring importance of preserving stories, artifacts, and experiences that define Detroit. Our quad anniversary events bring these threads together—honoring the people, places, and institutions that have shaped the city while inviting today’s community to engage with its ongoing story.
