Conversation Tube

Double-Bell Conversation Tube - Flexible tube covered with two layers of woven cloth. The inner layer is black, the green outer casing is worn through in several areas. There are matching black bells either end of the tube. They appear to be molded of hardened rubber. One bell has two significant cracks. No maker marks.
Similar conversation tubes with two bells were used as hearing aids (sometimes between two people with hearing loss), to ease conversation in noisy environments such as railroad carriages, and sometimes between courting couples to speak without being overheard by a chaperone.
