Drawing

Vega de Cuba

One cigar box top illustration, "Vega de Cuba," that was done by the Pasbach-Voice Lithographing Company, Inc., of New York. The drawing was done in watercolor on a thin sheet of white art board and features a tobacco plantation scene near a shoreline. Ships and distant shorelines are visible across a harbor in the background. Above the scene, large white text on a decorative, rectangular red background reads "Vega de Cuba," A red/blue/green and gold-colored shield emblem with two griffons is shown above the text. (Possibly the plantation was owned by a family whose surname was Vega.) Five gold-colored medallions are shown at both the lower left and right corners of the image. A blue/gray cloud pattern forms the background in the four corners of the drawing. The artist's name or marks are not visible. A white adhesive label on the verso has red printed and handwritten text that reads "No. 617, K.P.V," and "Everything That's Lithographed, Pasbach-Voice Lithographing Co., Inc., Art Lithographers, 140-142 Sixth Avenue, New York City. Western Branch: 30 E. Randolph Street, Chicago." A black ink stamp has text that reads "Art Gallery of Windsor, 27." The drawing is mounted in a tan matte board frame.
