Earl of Warwick
One cigar box top illustration, "Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick," that was done by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit. The drawing was done in watercolor on a thin sheet of white art board. It shows an oval-shaped, head and upper torso formal portrait of Robert Rich as a middle-aged man who has long brown hair, a moustache, and goatee. He is wearing a suit of armor and a white Puritan collar. The image is shown on a red background. Decorative gold-colored scrollwork designs and shields are shown at the left and right sides of the portrait and a pair of gold-colored crossed swords is shown at the bottom. A wide horizontal pale blue band is shown in the background with antique tan/brown coloring shown at the corners. Black and gold-colored printed text above the image reads "Robert Rich" and small gold-colored text beneath the crossed swords reads "Earl of Warwick." The artist's name or marks are not visible. A white adhesive label on the verso has black and red printed text that reads "No. A, 2794." Adjacent black and white printed text reads "This Sketch is the Property of the Calvert Lithographing Co., Detroit, Mich., 'The Model Shop' and Is To Be Returned to Them Whether Accepted Or Not." Additional printed text reads "It Must Not Be Exhibited Without Our Consent To Our Competitors Nor Used In Any Way." A black ink stamp has text that reads "Art Gallery of Windsor, 34." The drawing is mounted in a tan matte board frame.
