Drawing
Mr. Pecksniff
One cigar box top illustration, "Mr. Pecksniff," that was done by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit. The drawing was done in watercolor on white art board. It shows a painting of an aristocratic English gentleman who is standing in an aloof pose in a living room. A box of drafting instruments and an architectural drawing can be seen on a table to his right and a large upholstered chair can be seen at his left. His framed portrait is visible on a wall in the left background and his image is also carved on a marble bust that is mounted on a pedestal in the right background. A decorative gold-colored scrollwork design with two small medallions surrounds the living room scene. Blue and gold-colored text across the top reads "Mr. Pecksniff." The artist's name or marks are not visible. A white adhesive label on the verso has black printed text that reads "No. A, 62." Adjacent black and white printed text reads "This Sketch is the Property of the Calvert Lithographing Co., Detroit, Mich., 'The Model Shop' and Is To Be Returned to Them Whether Accepted Or Not." Additional printed text reads "It Must Not Be Exhibited Without Our Consent To Our Competitors Nor Used In Any Way." A black ink stamp has text that reads "Art Gallery of Windsor, 5." The drawing is mounted in a tan matte board frame.
