Drawing

La Bois Blanc

One cigar box top illustration, "La Bois Blanc," that was done by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit. The drawing was done in watercolor on white paper that was mounted on a sheet of white art board. It shows decorative red/gold leaf and scrollwork border design around a central image which depicts a port bow view of an excursion steamship that is underway in fair weather on a river. (The ship resembles the COLUMBIA or STE. CLAIRE and may be underway on the Detroit River.) Large buildings can be seen along a treed shoreline in the background (possibly located on Bois Blanc / Bob-Lo Island). A small multi-color drawing of a commercial steamship is shown to the left of the central image and a multi-color drawing of a lighthouse is shown to the right. The artist's name or marks are not visible. Handwritten pencil text on the verso reads "C-11." A black ink stamp has text that reads "Art Gallery of Windsor, 3." The drawing is mounted in a tan matte board frame.
