Drawing

El Stofile

One cigar box top illustration, "El Stofile," that was done by American Box Supply Company or possibly by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit. The drawing was done in watercolor on white art board. It shows a vertical oval-shaped head and shoulders portrait image at the top center that depicts a young woman in peasant attire. A large rectangular label beneath the portrait has white text on a red background that reads "El Stofile." The label has a decorative green and gold-colored border. Two decorative gold-colored urns are shown on either side of the label and each urn contains three tall wavy green stems with red flowers on top. The entire design is shown on a black background. The artist's name or marks are not visible. An adhesive white paper label on the verso has black printed text that reads "American Box Supply Co., 2309 Russell Street, Detroit, Michigan," and a logo with text that reads "ABS Cigar Manufacturers Supplies." Adjacent handwritten pencil text reads "Not our title on the label." A black ink stamp has text that reads "Return to: Art Gallery of Windsor, 4." The drawing is mounted in a tan matte board frame.
