We are thankful for the Detroit Historical Museum in displaying the Detroit ’67 Riots; so complete and to detail. It brings back my memories so clear and especially seeing the “Life“ magazine front cover of their issue dated August 4, 1967, on display with my brother Bob (Howard Robert Schmidt) on it. Bob passed away in January of 2011.
While Dad, Mom and I, along with our dog, were returning from vacationing on Cape Cod Bay, the car radio was broadcasting riots in New York City as we were driving on the New York Turnpike. Dad said, by the time we arrive home we might see riots in Detroit just like the one around 1930. Dad was right the Detroit ’67 Riots started once we arrive home.
While walking our dog back home in Detroit, we could see the sky in the East was black ~ solid black, it was frightening. My brother Bob (Howard Robert Schmidt) was in the Michigan National Guard was called up.
