A century later, the impossible returns.
Step beyond the ordinary and into the strange and spectacular world of Harry Houdini as we mark 100 years since his death in Detroit.
Houdini performed in Detroit 19 times between 1894 and 1926, and the city would ultimately become the setting for the dramatic final chapter of his extraordinary life: his final stage performance, followed just days later by his death. Now, a century later, the Detroit Historical Society invites you to explore Houdini’s remarkable career, enduring legend, and final days in Detroit amid a world of vaudeville stages, dime museums, sideshow curiosities, and daring escapes.
Encounter Houdini’s escapes, films, skepticism, relentless self-invention, and extraordinary showmanship through historic artifacts, footage, theatrical displays, strange objects, and unusual curiosities. Learn how Houdini transformed himself into an international sensation and built a legend that continues to captivate audiences a century later.
Throughout the Museum, live magic contortion, hula-hoop performance, and other unusual entertainment will evoke the vaudeville stages, sideshows, and popular entertainments of Housini's era—all along savory bites, sweet treats, wine, beer, and a signature cocktail.
Pulling back the curtain on Houdini's Detroit story, Detroit Historical Society historian Brendan Roney will present Detroit Was Wild About Harry, exploring Houdini’s appearances in the Motor City, his rise to international fame, and the final days that forever linked his story to Detroit.
Turning the spotlight to Houdini the entertainer, Nathan "McScary" Wakefield –a variety performer and entertainment historian- will explore the showman's lasting influence from the stage itself, blending history with demonstrations of sideshow arts, including sword swallowing.
History takes the stage for one final act as magician and escape artist Anthony Grupido channels Houdini's daring and showmanship through a series of astonishing escapes.
For one night only, history takes the stage and the impossible returns.
