On the night of Friday, December 26th, 1913, the old Michigan Central Railroad Depot at Fort and 3rd Street suffered a devastating fire, forcing an early opening of the new Michigan Central Railroad Depot and Hotel near Michigan and 14th on the following day. An engrossing story of service, decline, full-on blight and triumphant reemergence have followed in the 113 years since. Join author, photographer and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson as he traces the M.C.R.R.’s captivating history, from inception to the present day, in a PowerPoint presentation replete with photographic comparisons of the station’s bleakest era and its radiant past and present. This lecture will run approximately one hour. Bring your own stories of this famed landmark to share during a post-lecture discussion and Q&A.
