Detroit Historical Society Special Events take place at both the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Many are one-day events that often take place annually. Others are special lectures featuring notable speakers that the Society has the unique privilege of hosting for both its members and those that love history.

29th Great Lakes Shipwreck Festival

This annual event, presented by the Ford Seahorses Scuba Diving Club in partnership with the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, will feature sessions on Great Lakes shipwrecks, exhibits from the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and others.

The Ford Seahorses Scuba Diving Club, established in 1957 as a member of the Ford Employees Recreation Association (FERA), is one of Michigan's most active clubs. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the enjoyment and advancement of the sport of scuba diving.

Maritime Symposium
Dossin Great Lakes Museum
Saturday, March 6
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Maritime enthusiasts unite! This day-long symposium will give you the chance to meet and hear from various maritime authors, divers and historians. The keynote speaker will be Robert Schultz, author of We Were Pirates, who will discuss Detroit’s World War II submarine. Other scheduled guests are Joe Grimm and Patrick Livingston.
Lunch is included in the price of the symposium!

Join us for a celebration of spring! This family-friendly event, back for a second year, has something for everyone. Children 12 and under will decorate and fill their own bags with trinkets and candy. The entire family will enjoy the Spring Variety Show by Richard Paul, hear a story, learn about old fashioned games and enjoy light refreshments.

Dossin Gala
Dossin Great Lakes Museum

The evening will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Dossin Museum and will include a silent auction filled with maritime-related items, a strolling dinner, and casino style games.
Guests will also have the chance to see two exciting new exhibits, Life on a Long Ship: Great Lakes Sailors and a special exhibit dedicated to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum’s 50th Anniversary. The exhibits open April 24, 2010.
The event is sponsored by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.
