Special Events



Detroit Historical Society Special Events take place at both the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Many are one-day events that often take place annually. Others are special lectures featuring notable speakers that the Society has the unique privilege of hosting for both its members and those that love history.

Admission prices vary.

A Vernor's Ad-Venture
Foran's Grand Trunk Pub (612 Woodward Ave.)

Enjoy a day of Vernor’s history!  There will be Vernor’s floats, sales tables of memorabilia, a 1954 newsreel about Vernor’s, photos by the huge Vernor’s sign at Foran’s and more.  At 11:30 a.m., participants will walk to the Guardian Building where the Pure Detroit store will feature the genuine gnome from the Vernor’s Plant at 4501 Woodward. A tour of the first floor will offered and the Vernor’s Float Drinking Contest will take place at the Rowland Café. 

 

Guests will then venture to Hart Plaza, where the mighty Vernor’s plant and soda fountain once stood, for a walking tour.  The event concludes with an author signing of the book Vernor’s Ginger Ale. 

 

The event is sponsored by The Vernor’s Club, Pure Detroit, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, and the Detroit Historical Society

 

The event is FREE and you do not have to be a member of the Vernor’s Club to attend.

Ship Spectacular
Dossin Great Lakes Museum

See the vessels that travel the Great Lakes including the Pride of Michigan and learn more about the ship and its crew!  The ship will dock near the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.

Detroit and Windsor: A Bootlegging Tour
Wednesday, September 29

Departs Stroh River Place at 5:30 p.m. and returns by 8 p.m.

 

Explore this chapter in our history first-hand by sailing past some of the bootleggers’ favorite locations along the Detroit River!

 

Guests will enjoy dinner on board one of the Diamond Jack boats and listen as guides share their knowledge of the infamous activity that shaped our city in the 1920s and 1930s.

 

The tour is brought to you by Preservation Wayne and the Detroit Historical Society.

Fair Winds Fall Gathering
Dossin Great Lakes Museum

Celebrate the Dossin Great Lakes Museum's 50th anniversary at the annual Fair Winds Fall Gathering sponsored by the Society's Dossin Maritime Group. 

Featured speaker and Society Trustee Doug Dossin will discuss his family's history in the food processing and soft drink bottling business, their accomplishments in hydroplane racing and why they chose to create a lasting legacy through the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.
