WELCOME!
The Detroit Historical Society is always looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with tours, special events, office work and programs. If you are flexible, energetic and enthusiastic about Detroit’s history, then we just might be the place for you!
The following is a list of current volunteer needs:
- Docent/Gallery Guide/Bus Tours – lead tours of the Museum to schoolchildren and other groups. Please note: docents must be willing to provide at least 2 hours/week during the school year.
- Special Events and Programs – assist the Society with its fun-filled programs. Programs are often scheduled in the evening and on weekends, so this is a very flexible opportunity!
- Clerical and Administrative – help the Society complete its basic administrative tasks, so that we can continue to provide the highest quality programs and events to the community
- Historical and Archival Research – help our curatorial and collections team with their tasks – from cataloguing artifacts to completing research assignments
- Carpentry, painting, repair and maintenance – put your skills and talents to use making sure that the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum look as good as they possibly can for our visitors
- Marketing/Public Relations – help us get the word out about our great programs, exhibits and events by joining the PR and marketing team

General Volunteer Requirements include:
Please note that all Society volunteers are required to become members of the Society. Volunteers who provide more than 50+ hours of service annually have the requirement waived.
Please also note that all Society volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
